Species: Cyborg
Occupation: Weaponsmith/Helmsman
Allegiance: Pirate
Home Island/Ocean: Enterprise Island/South Blue
Appearance: Appearance: Avery is five feet and nine inches tall. He is white, but his skin has been darkened somewhat from spending six months on a wild island, training. He has a scar on his right shoulder, another on his chest, and a third across his lower back. These were received from fighting wild animals on the aforementioned wild island. Avery is also a little leaner and more muscular than before. His hair is jet black and fairly long. It stops just above his eyes on the front and at the bottom of his neck on the back. His eyes are an odd gray color, which looks silvery in the light. Avery’s attire generally consists of a sleeveless, black hoodie, which is worn over a long-sleeve black shirt, with dark brown pants, around which he wears a light brown belt, and he wears a pair of black, combat boots. He also always wears a pair of fingerless gloves, each of which has a flame design on the back. Avery has a mechanical leg on his right side and a mechanical arm on his left. He has managed to create a "skin" to cover them and hide what they truly are. Now they look and feel real, though admittedly they are heavy when compared to the rest of his body. He has a spear that can be separated and reconnected to form different weapons. He used to carry it on his back, but now he keeps it in its tonfa form in sheathes on each of his sides.
History: Avery was born on the Enterprise. Island, that is. He had two siblings, a boy and a girl. They are twins who were born nine years before Avery was. As such, he was always the baby of the family. Because of this, Avery was a little bit spoiled by his parents, but overall he turned out fine. When he was fourteen, Avery was apprenticed to a weaponsmith. He learned many things from his master, a tough acting old man. This job required Avery to do a lot of things, including making weapons, running the weapon shop, and even delivering weapons to other islands. Because he was delivering the weapons, sometimes on other islands, Avery became pretty good at finding his way around and controlling his ship. When he was fifteen, Avery had an accident at work in which his leg was crushed. His career seemed to be at an end and Avery stayed home for a long time, recovering. However, he wouldn't stay down and returned to his master begging him to help create a new leg for him. It took the two of them many months, but after much study and hard work, they created a working model. It wasn't great, but it was good enough.
So Avery's life began again. He started working full time again at the weaponsmith shop. During the next five years, Avery created his Hagane Yobirin, which is a bo staff that can be changed into a pair of nunchucks, and he made adjustments to his leg. He began practicing with his new weapon and because there wasn't anyone on the island who could teach him, Avery had to teach himself how to wield it. Avery also trained his body, running through town first along the streets and then by the rooftops. He became strong and fast. Some people questioned him as to why he was doing this, but he would just shrug and say, "Because I can." After some time, things began to change. It was only small things at first. News of wars reached the island. Whispers of a powerful man named Anubis made their way through town. Soon, another name, Seshomaru was spoken of. Even in a small town like the one Avery lived in could not stay out of the fighting.
They came on Avery's birthday: Pirates. There were three ships that slid into the harbor on that fine summer morning. The pirates came into town and went to the local bars. They weren't bad customers, just rowdier then most. Then the Marines came. They captured one of the pirate ships and sunk the other two. Then they streamed into town and fought the pirates. Despite being outnumbered, the pirates fought tooth and nail and managed to push the Marines back. During the battle, Avery was running around the town, protecting people and trying to get them to safety. He fought both pirates and Marines, whichever was endangering his people more at the time. The Marines fell back to their ships and began bombarding the town. The whole town was decimated. Many of the civilians had been evacuated from town, but others, such as Avery's parents, had not escaped in time. They were killed in the attack. Avery survived with minor injuries.
After the battle, Avery wandered town with many of the townspeople. They located Avery's parent's bodies underneath the wreckage of a building, which had fallen on them as they had tried to escape. Next Avery went to the old weapon shop where he had worked. It too had been destroyed and very little was left, just one or two swords. Even the boat Avery had used was gone. After searching the shop for a while, Avery found the old man's corpse. Stricken by grief, Avery started to leave town, but then he ran into an injured dog in the ruins of a house that had the bodies of many people in it. The dog was a bloodhound. Avery took care of the dog, bringing it with him when he left the town. He nursed it back to health and it stuck with him. He named the dog Lawrence for no reason other than he liked the name.
Avery traveled to the opposite side of his home island and found another town. There he bought a rowboat and supplies and then set sail into the unknown. The Marines then put a bounty on Avery's head due to his actions in the battle. He had defeated a total of twenty-seven, battle hardened Marines and about as many pirates.
Avery's life didn't slow down after he left home. He and Lawrence ran into a duo who were forming a crew called the Fair Pirates. At first Avery was considering staying with them, but certain incidents led to both Avery and Lawrence deciding that that duo needed to work things out between them before forming a crew of pirates.
Later, Avery and Lawrence encountered the Milky Way Pirates, a crew that was still in the midst of forming. The young man and his dog joined the Milky Ways. Officially they were joining to help the Milky Ways get through the Grandline, but the real reason was because Avery had fallen in love with one of its members, a young woman named Arianne Greyson. Avery and Lawrence had not been with the Milky Ways long when the captain of the new crew, Saki Star, decided to have everyone train for the course of one year before entering the Grandline.
Lawrence and Avery stayed with the Milky Ways for six months of this training period before Avery came to the decision to leave the crew for the remainder of that time. He had been researching an old legend and discovered the secret location of an island deep within the South Blue. It was a wild island, upon which only Weaponsmiths and Blacksmiths, who do not use the Tetsu-Tetsu no mi, were permitted to walk. So they traveled there, leaving behind their crew and, to Avery's great sadness, Arianne. He had grown very close to her and didn't want to leave her, even if it was only for a little while.
At the island Avery and Lawrence met a man who guarded the island from outsiders. He accepted Avery as his pupil after some initial tests and began training him in the more advanced methods of making weapons. Since this island was so wild, it was a struggle just to survive and the man who lived there refused to help Avery and Lawrence as a part of their training. So the two of them had to fight wild beasts and gather their own food and build their own shelter. This was slowly making them stronger and Avery was pleased with the progress he was making. Soon he had begun to make a knife with a special mixture of metals and seastone that the guardian of the island had developed.
While Avery was doing this, Lawrence became depressed. He was getting stronger, but Avery was still protecting him in every one of their fights. He wanted to do more. Unfortunately, Avery could not see what was happening to his pet and one day, the dog simply vanished. Avery looked for Lawrence, but the island was big and he couldn't find him. So Avery went back to his training and hoped desperately that Lawrence would return alive.
A week later, Lawrence reemerged from the wilderness. He was covered in wounds and his right front leg had been bitten off. Avery gave him a mechanical leg to replace the old one and warned him to not stray off again. Lawrence disobeyed this order as soon as he was better and he left once more. So once again Avery went out looking for him. He couldn't find Lawrence and went home to wait for his return.
Two weeks later, Lawrence was still not back so Avery went looking for him again. He failed to find him once more. At long last, Avery decided that his friend must have been killed by the wild animals on the island and he went back to his training with a renewed vigor, trying to keep busy to block out the pain. Lawrence had been his best friend from the time his parents died and Avery couldn't believe that he was gone.
Several months passed and Avery had grown much stronger. Without Lawrence around to back him up, each of his fights had been much more difficult and he was forced to improve drastically. During this period, Avery had perfected the method his teacher had given him and created a new and improved Hagane Yobirin. It was now a spear, which had a blade on both ends and could be changed into a pair of tonfa as well as its old twin nunchuck form. He also created a "skin" that could be used to cover up his leg and make it look ordinary. This skin does not grow like real skin and it cannot endure attacks, it's just a way of hiding the fact that Avery does not have his right leg any longer.
Later on during the period after Lawrence vanished, Avery went into jungle and was hit by a sudden burst of nostalgia, remembering his dog. Unknown to Avery, the king of the island's animals had been tracking him. This king, a giant tiger, had been watching Avery as the young man defeated all of his underlings. Now he was prepared to take down the upstart himself. So he attacked, but Avery was not the same person as before, plus he was greatly angered by the loss of his friend. The battle was fierce, but in the end, Avery won, killing the tiger. However, Avery lost his left arm in the process. He replaced it with a mechanical version and covered it with the "skin" he uses on his leg.
One month before Avery would have left to go back to the Milky Ways, Avery's teacher came to visit him. This was the first time he had ever come around to see his pupil at his own house. Usually he just left Avery alone except when Avery was training. Avery's teacher informed the young man that he had seen a strange creature up around one of the volcanoes on the island. He said that this particular volcano was inhabited by a pack of wolves, but a dog had apparently been running with the pack. Avery wondered if this could be Lawrence and he went up to the volcano to make sure one way or the other, despite thinking that there was very little chance that this dog could be his pet. To Avery's great surprise, it was Lawrence. Not only was his dog alive, but he was much bigger than before. Lawrence was four feet tall and still growing. For his part, Lawrence was surprised to find that Avery had lost his left arm and now replaced it with a mechanical counterpart. He knew how much Avery hated his mechanical leg. After this first meeting, Avery left, seeing that Lawrence was happy where he was, but he returned frequently to check up on his friend. Avery even developed a new, larger leg for Lawrence to fit his steadily growing body. He also made a new eye for his dog because Lawrence had lost his right eye at some point during their separation.
The last month of their stay on the island was a happy one. Avery had already learned what he had wanted to learn and Lawrence was now able to fight at his side without his protection. The two of them spent the remainder of their stay honing their skills.
At long last, the time to return had arrived. Lawrence bid his wolf friends goodbye, met up with Avery on the shore, and started the long journey back to the Milky Ways. Avery's heart was already filled with the excitement and anticipation of seeing Arianne again.
Personality: Avery is a very light-hearted and happy person. He enjoys meeting new people and seeing new places, although he does sometimes act condescending towards them to cover up his interest. Avery is also a very loyal person when it comes to his friends and will stick by them to the bitter end, should he deem it necessary. There are many things Avery does not like. Some of those include the Marines, paper bags, and cats. However, he is also not particularly fond of his mechanical leg or arm. The fact is, Avery considers himself to be a freak, even more so than he does devil fruit users. The reason for this is that devil fruit users are still alive, regardless of their abilities; whereas Avery’s right leg and right arm are not and they will never live again. For this reason, Avery pities all other cyborgs and hates those that would make them simply for gain. Despite his negative attitude towards all of these, Avery does care about some things. Most notably are the people (and animals) in his life. Arianne, Lawrence, and the rest of the Milky Way crew are all precious to Avery.
Ship: A rowboat
Ship Flag: It is a metallic looking Jolly Roger with a bo staff place horizontally behind it, replacing the crossbones.
Devil Fruit: N/A
Special Abilities:
Strength: Avery's strength has increased significantly over the past year. He has grown to the point where he can pierce steel with his new spear.
Nimble: Avery is very quick on his feet and is athletic. With his current physical abilities and with the help of his mechanical leg he can now jump on top of three story buildings and he can also move at eye blurring speeds for short periods of time.
Learned Techniques:
Spear Techniques
1. Merry-Go-Round: First Avery spins his spear in front of him and then he spins it around his body as he continues spinning the spear itself, using it to strike everyone around him.
2. Double Drop: Avery tries to sweep his opponent's feet out from under them and then swings his spear at their fallen form.
3. One Step: Avery swings his spear like a baseball bat, making it look like he is trying to simply whack his opponent as hard as possible. However, he twists his weapon as he does this causing the part he is holding, in other words the part that is closest to him, to separate from the front three parts, all of which remain connected. This makes his weapon a foot longer and can catch an opponent off guard if they simply tried to dodge by taking step back. Now, the reason why Avery would separate his spear in this way is because each of the outermost parts of his spear have chains connecting them to the inner parts while the inner parts do not have these chains connecting them to each other. These chains are ordinarily used so that the spear can be separated into two nunchucks. Using it in this manner makes it so that Avery can easily reconnect his spear's parts without flinging half of it away.
4. Fun House: Avery spins his spear over his head at high speed, creating a vortex around him that gathers dust, sand, and dirt to obscure him from sight. Avery can then spin his spear in front of him to direct the cloud of particles towards his opponent to try and blind them for a few seconds if he chooses to do so.
5. High Rise: Avery jumps into the air, swinging his spear upwards as he does so.
6. Sky Dive: Avery swings his spear downwards as he comes from above his opponent.
7. Piercing Fang: Avery puts on a burst of speed and thrusts his spear at his opponent's chest as he passes them by.
8. Cutting Edge: Avery swings his spear in a wide arc, launching a blade of wind that is as wide as the swing.
Nunchuck Techniques
1. Roller Coaster: Avery dashes forward and tries to land four rapid blows with his nunchucks as he passes his opponent by.
2. Mouse Trap: Avery catches his opponent's weapon in the chain of one of his nunchucks. He then tries to hit his opponent with his other nunchuck while dragging them into its range with the nunchuck holding their weapon and/or taking a step forward.
Tonfa Techniques
1. Scorpion Sting: A simultaneous, forward thrust of Avery's twin tonfa.
2. Roadrunner Race: Avery puts on a burst of speed and tries to cut his opponent with his tonfa as he passes.
