-Appearance information-Body: Having lived a relatively comfortable life thus far, Mel's body is free of any particularly notable scars or deformities. Her skin is on the fair side from staying inside a good amount of the time. Recently, though, the sun exposure from basic training has caused some faint freckles to spot the bridge of her nose and the tops of her shoulder. Sunburn tends to be an issue, and she doesn't tan very well at all.
The gentle curves in her body aren't very prominent, nor is her bust anything out of the ordinary. This suits her purposes just fine though. She thinks that stuff would just get in her way, at least that's what she's been telling herself all this time. Her height reaches up to about 5'8", making her taller than average for her gender. When it comes to muscles, Mel is lightly built. She's best as short bursts of speed and agility but tends to lack in the power department, and it shows in her lean muscles.
Face: The first thing someone might notice about Mel's face is her blue eyes. Even with the bits of green and gray mixed in, they're pretty bright. Her eyebrows rest above her eyes, like a normal person's would. They're a bit on the slender side, and are the same white blonde color as her hair is. Along with her eyes, Mel's brows are pretty expressive compared to the rest of her face. Her jawline is sleek and tapers to a soft point for her chin.
Hair: Mel's hair is of a white blonde color, complementing her fair skin color. It appears to be pretty healthy and well taken care of for the most part. Her bangs are of the wispy sort and tend to be a bit longer on the right side than the other. The thick hair is long enough to reach to the bottom of her shoulder blades. Although it starts out straight at the roots, it has a soft wave to it. She usually doesn't have the energy to do anything particularly fancy with her hair, so it's kept down most of the time.
Non visual information: Mel has a composed and easy-going air about her, making it not too difficult for other people to speak with her. She's pretty down to earth in that aspect. Her voice reflects this with her mellow, quieter-than-most tone. Mel avoids using hand gestures when she speaks for the most part and relies on the pitch of her voice and facial expressions instead. Someone with a sharp sense of smell would probably notice the scent of coffee on the undertone.
Clothing: Like marines of her status ought to, Mel wears the standard seaman recruit uniform. Since the things don't usually come in women's sizes, the white and blue shirt doesn't really flatter her figure at all. It's a bit on the big side, even though she has a clump of it tied off with an elastic band near the bottom of the shirt. The blue trousers are rolled up at the bottom so they're at a regular length for someone of her stature. Underneath are a pair of black combat boots that are a bit on the masculine side, but they're built for durability nonetheless. To top it all off, there's the white marine cap.
-Personality information-Personality Overview: At first glance, Mel is a rather mellow individual. She's more patient than most people you'll meet, and she prefers keeping to herself for the most part. Mel was never a social butterfly, nor did she have many friends. Although this last part has less to do with her social abilities and more with a bit of passive aggressiveness when her mood becomes foul. She tends to be the type of person that will say that a misdoing's forgiven one moment with a smile on her face, only to do something spiteful hours later. It usually doesn't reach that point, though, unless someone's being particularly antagonistic towards her.
Sarcasm is another thing that tends get her into trouble. She has a horrible habit of using it when she's irritated, which is surprisingly often, and her stoic exterior doesn't help things. Her ire can be earned in multiple ways, whether it be negligence or general stupidity. Mel values common sense and a strong set of morals, and believes that while most people have a drop of it somewhere, there are some that are a lost cause and lack it entirely. She rarely wastes her time with people she believes to be that, whether they be of a higher rank or not.
When it comes to pirates, it's common for Mel to initially assume any and all of them are brainless brutes in it for the booty. Those have pretty much been the only type she's encountered so far, so she has little sympathy when she gives them a one way ticket behind bars. A "guilty until proven innocent", sorta thing. She also takes this approach with people, often not trusting them entirely until she feels comfortable with them. Granted, when she does trust someone, she's as loyal as can be.
Likes and Hopes: Mel has a major soft spot for coffee, the more robust the better. She can drink the dark stuff like water if given the chance; the healthiness of such a feat being quite debatable. Wine and finer food is another favorite of hers. Just as finicky with people as she is with cuisine, she expects a certain amount of quality out of people. She likes those who aren't out-spoken or rude, and a certain air of assurance about themselves. People without any morals tend to be low on her list, as well as people who act without a second thought of others.
Unlike some people, Mel doesn't hope for many things. It's rare to see her not being pessimistic about something. What she does wish is for herself to be competent in her endeavors, maybe even the people she has to deal with too. That, and how she might not drop dead before she does something worthwhile. Something such as that might put a damper on things.
Dislikes and Fears: A quick way to end up on Mel's bad list is to act mindlessly without thinking of the consequences. For this reason, she tends to not like brutish figures that immediately leap to violence as the only answer. Mel also isn't a fan of loud, crowded places. Or loud people, for that matter. She much prefers peace and quiet instead. It gives her time to think and relax, since noise tends to startle her pretty easily if she's focused on something.
Mel has some pretty basic fears. While she isn't scared of death as much as your average person, the thought of harm coming to those she's close to frightens her more. If it were either her safety or a friend's, she would protect the other if she could. Along with that, she's often paranoid that people may not be entirely truthful with her. She absolutely despises being lied to or betrayed to the point of jumping to conclusions that someone might be trying to trick her.
-History information-- Early Years:
Melanie was born the only child of Philip and Janelle Harper. Her father was a respected banker for their port town, which gave their mother a chance to live at home and care for Mel without much trouble. Since the town was a high traffic area for traders, the bank flourished for the most part. The family had plenty of money for the basics, and had plenty left over for a good house and lifestyle. Mel got used to the lack of siblings, and became used to the quieter lifestyle and attention she got from her caring parents.
- Schooling:
Even though Mel grew up in a fairly well-off household, her parents were good at keeping her down to earth. The couple had both started out from the bottom and worked themselves up to where they were. Mel was always told to use her old toys instead of buying new ones. She was able to do well in elementary school also, since her parents pushed education pretty hard. Although she didn't seem to be pretty good with making friends, Mel proved herself to be brighter than the average student. Her parents were quite proud of her, and would often give her plenty of responsibilities to take care of.
- SLIP UP:
When Mel was old enough, her father eventually had enough trust in her to leave the capable late teen unattended at the bank if something were to come up. One particular day when her uncle needed help across town, Mel was watching over the teller when a desperate man came along. Her father told her to take care of the simpler requests, but this man needed a massive sum of money. Apparently, a medical emergency had popped up within his family and he needed a loan from the bank immediately to pay off the doctors.
Although Mel was only supposed to watch over the counter while her father was gone, she felt pity for the man and gave him the money he needed. When her father returned, she mentioned what happened earlier that day. It didn't take long for him to realize that the man didn't even leave his proper contact information and didn't appear intent on paying back the money at all. Heck, he didn't even say what his family member's illness was when Mel pressed him about it. Mel soon realized her mistake. While her father didn't stay upset about the fiasco for very long, she still felt guilty about it for some time. That, and frustrated at the man for pulling the wool over her eyes. So much for assuming he had good intention.
- Basic Training:
It wasn't long until Mel became interested in the marines. Particularly since her earlier mishap, Mel wasn't particularly interested in banking. She wanted to travel around and see new things, and this was a good way of doing it. Basic training wasn't too difficult for her, although she opted to get rid of the brutish sword swinging for something a bit finer. One of the captains in charge of the training knew a good deal about fencing, which Mel much preferred. Recently, she has finished her required training and has started working out in the field.

Learned skills:- Swordplay - Fencing: Mel's offensive style of choice. It's easy to see she has a knack for the high speed and skillful sword style, but she still has a way to go.
- Marksmanship: While not an amazing shot, Mel knows how to handle the rifle she was given for her work in the marines. Her aim's alright, but her knowledge and comfort level with the gun and reloading it is substantially weaker.
