Appearance: Halmsmarr's appearance immediately betrays his origins.
History: Halmsmarr comes from a farming community in west blue, where combat of a level greater than a barroom scuffle was virtually unheard of. Nevertheless, marines had nominal presence in the island, mainly because the island produced a large amount of grain to be shipped all over west blue. The only things of note the village had were the farms and the shipping harbor for the considerable amount of export flowing out of the island.
Then one day, pirates with more swords than sense appeared on the island, determined to loot and pillage it despite the fact that it had little to pillage in the first place. The farmers and the marines mounted a defense, and unusually enough, they won. Halmsmarr, having demonstrated both battle prowess and strategic ability, was approached by a marine commander about joining the marines. Him, seeing an honorable, productive and necessary job offered to him, accepted.
He was in many ways, an ideal marine. He rose through the ranks, excelling at command even more than he excelled at grunt work. However, he hasn't had too much ambition for advancement, and he has mostly endeavored to do his job to the best of his ability, eventually earning a transfer to the Grand Line. His hard work has paid off, and he is now a rear admiral even though he doesn't have anything too remarkable to his name. Though he may not grace the history book, he will always do his part.
Personality: Halmsmarr is a simple man, espousing hard work and obedience, though he is capable of the occasional flash of brilliance. He is well and truly a man of the countryside, and his attitudes reflect this. As far as he figures, his missions as a marine are just his job, and he ought to do that job to the best of his ability, preferring to leave the more minute moral implications for someone else to deal with. He is still known to be reasonable, and he will not kill civilians or sacrifice innocents just to do his job. In his mind, there is always a better way.
Halmsmarr is a charismatic leader to his men, which is perhaps his greatest virtue as a marine officer. When he tells someone to do something, they have a tendency to obey. This combined with his tendency to just take the orders of his superiors at face value and carry them out make him a very dependable and effective officer for the marines.
