Appearance: Shan is an old man whose body is like an old man's. His overall structure is that of an old man, who has become short because of the aging of his body. His height is around 1.3 meters and he is very thin. There are no signs of muscle on his body and he looks very frail. Basically, his whole body is just the bones he has and the flesh that covers it.

Regarding his face, all of his aspects are like an old man's, just like his overall body structure. He has long white hair that are tied like a ponytail. However, because of his long age, a big part of his hair has fallen from his head and so his hair start at the back of his head and cannot be seen from the front, with an exception of the few hair he has around his ears. Also, Shan's face is completely wrinkled. He has wrinkles at every spot of his face that can have wrinkles. His eyes are very thin and slim and they can be barely seen by the others. His nose is quite small and he has a signature spot on it. On his right cheek, he has a small scar from a sword. Finally, regarding his facial hair, Shan has a small white goatee.

Finally, his clothes consist of black pants and a red robe that is tied, revealing a part of his chest. His chest is full of white hair and a scar can be barely seen on it. The robe is big enough to almost completely cover his black pants. He wears pink socks and black sandals. Also, at his waist he carries a quite long katana which is sheathed in a black sheath with red spots. As Shan is quite short and the katana is long, the sheath is usually in contact with the ground.

History: According to Shan Yang, he has been a sailor for many years. He was 15 years old when he first started sailing around the world, as an explorer. His first travels were in the West Blue, his home ocean. During that time, he traveled for around 10 years and he learned many things about the place, including information about most islands. Also, during those times, Shan Yang started training himself as a swordsman so that he would protect himself and the rest of his exploring crew in case they were attacked by pirates.

After those 10 years, and after realizing that he was considerably stronger than he was when he started exploring West Blue, Shan Yang decided to travel to other places, as well. Along with the rest of his exploring crew, he travelled to the other Blues and even to the Grand Line. His travels around those places lasted for 25 more years. During those years, Shan Yang made himself even stronger than he was when he was sailing around the West Blue and he perfected his swordsmanship, becoming a greater swordsman and a capable fighter. During those travels, Shan also came to an understanding of the ways of the pirates, especially during his years in the Grand Line. As his crew was constantly attacked by pirates, he had common interactions with them and he gained knowledge over them. He could see how the strong ones behaved, how the weak ones would act when they would encounter a strong opponent and the difference between the strong-willed ones and the ones without will. He met and had battles with many infamous pirates before the Great Pirate Era and because of these interactions with them he gained the unique ability of understanding the people with potential to become unique pirates.

After the end of his travels around the Grand Line, Shan finally returned back at his home island. At the time he returned back at his home island, he was 50 years old. He started living inside a small hut at the edge of his small home island and lived by himself for more than 50 years. However, one day, he looked at a ship as it arrived at the island, the ship of the Two Sided Adventurers. Hyman, the captain of the Two Sided Adventurers who had just started sailing around the West Blue, had heard a rumor about him and so he got to the island in order to recruit him to his crew, if the rumor was real. Seeing this as a last chance to sail again as an explorer, Shan accepted the invitation and so he became a core member of the Two Sided Adventurers.

Personality: Shan is a quiet person, just like his captain. However, he has a very different behavior. Instead of showing that he only wants to live his own adventures, he observes the areas around him. He is a person who observes everything around him and is constantly informed about anything. He enjoys reading the newspapers to find out the latest information and he never forgets anything he reads, even if he is so old. He also keeps track at the bounty posters and the information that the newspapers give about pirates in order to be wary of the pirates that his crew might encounter during their travels. Furthermore, he likes telling stories about his old travels and he tends to connect events that happen around him with events that happened to him during his first travels. However, all his stories cannot be verified as true, as Shan has been caught lying many times, something that makes him a quite suspicious person...

During a battle, just like his captain, Shan is a very ruthless person. His old age has drained him the passion for life but has made him knowledgeable enough to not be tricked and to not be controlled by his own emotions. He is very logical, he never loses his temper and he ruthlessly murders any people who can be a threat to his crew. If his crew is in danger, he does not hesitate to kill the enemies in an instant, if he has the chance to do so. Unlike Hyman who has to be in danger in order to unlock that personality of himself, Shan has complete control over it and he can wake up the killer inside him any time he wants. This makes him look more dangerous than Hyman really is but the fact that Hyman is the captain and can control Shan, makes him less dangerous. That cruelty he has, combined with the fact that he is a liar and that he has great knowledge over the behavior of pirates usually makes people believe that Shan never actually was an explorer but he was a pirate during his youth. However, Shan does not admit that and keeps telling that he was simply and explorer. And more strangely, Hyman never points out that question, as if he knows the true answer to that question.

-Century Pace: Shan's moving technique. Shan runs very fast in order to dodge incoming attacks. This technique's nature is similar to Soru, but the technique itself is slower than Soru. It's speed is a little bit more than half the Soru speed.
-Century Wind: Shan cuts the air and air slash is launched against his opponents. This attack can be used in the form of a barrage.
-Century Bullet: Shan stabs the air and air bullets are launched against his enemies. This attack can be used in the form of a barrage.
