- Spoiler:
History: Reiji was born on Fur Island, which is in the North Blue, close to the North Pole. The island got its name from its major export, which is clothing made directly from animal furs and pelts. The majority of the island’s residents are poor. Reiji’s father worked in a factory that made these clothes. He was a manager at the factory, so he had decent wages and could afford some luxuries that others on the island could not. When Reiji was born, he had a defect. He did not have a left arm. All that he had was a stub, which he could move, but it wasn’t much use for anything.
Even with his problem, Reiji’s parents doted on him. They gave him extra food and bought him toys. Reiji did not realize just how much he had compared to the other children on the island. In fact, Reiji’s parents kept him inside most of the time and away from other people in general. They were somewhat embarrassed by Reiji’s defect and didn’t want others to see him unless they were close friends and would keep it a secret. So, up until he turned six and his dad was injured in an accident at the factory, Reiji didn’t know how good he had it. The injury his dad had was inflicted on his right leg. The hospitals on Fur Island were not very well equipped and Reiji’s parents could not afford to have the leg fixed on another island so in the end, it was amputated. Reiji’s father was stuck at home, unable to walk without assistance. His mother was forced to go and find work to support the family. Reiji’s world was collapsing around him.
A year passed and things were not getting better. Reiji was no longer sheltered from the outside world and he frequently explored Fur Island, looking for something to do. The other children on the island called him a freak and avoided him. One day, Reiji found a sheet of metal at his town’s dump. He returned home with it and showed it to his father. His father congratulated him on his find and asked him what he would do with it. At first Reiji was unsure, but he ended deciding to shape the metal into whatever came to mind. So Reiji set to work, taking his father’s hammer he began to work on the metal. It took him two weeks of work, but at long last he had beaten the metal into the shape of a bird. It wasn’t a very good bird, but Reiji’s father saw how his son enjoyed the work and so he asked Reiji to bring him some more metal. The next day, Reiji’s father took the metal his son had brought him and set to work himself. Reiji watched his father in fascination as the man took the metal and, using the fire in their fire place to make the metal bend easier, he hammered it into a crudely-shaped anvil. As he worked, Reiji’s father explained to him how his grandfather had been a specialized blacksmith who made weapons. In fact, Reiji’s grandfather had once made a sword that was the equal of a Great-grade sword. Reiji’s father presented his son with the anvil and told him to keep it in good condition as best he could and to enjoy it.
Reiji set to work once again. Now energized by the story of what his grandfather had done, Reiji began working on a dagger. The first dagger he made was weak and badly shaped. The second and third were also defective, but the fourth one Reiji’s father labeled as “Halfway decent”. Reiji continued making daggers until he had them down. Then he moved on to other weapons. Slowly, he began expanding his repertoire.
Years passed and Reiji was now thirteen. A man had been watching the boy for years, seeing him gathering metal from the dump and taking it home. He had often wondered what the boy was doing and at long last, when Reiji was away from home, the man began peeking in the windows to try and see what it was. It took him a couple of tries to find Reiji’s room and what a room it was! There were swords, maces, knives, flails, pistols, and many other weapons besides those lying in piles of similar weapons. In the center of the room was an anvil sitting on furnace Reiji had made when he was ten. This anvil was a far cry from the one Reiji’s father made of him. That old anvil had been beaten to a pulp and was currently lying, unused, in Reiji’s closet. This newer anvil had a long, thick, and flat top that was specifically created from Reiji’s use since he had only one arm. The anvil also had metal clasps that Reiji closed over the weapons he was making, to hold them down. The man looking through the window, who was a revolutionary, could not believe his eyes. He wondered how a boy, who only had one arm, could possibly do all of this! So, he left with every intention to return. The next day, he was back, watching Reiji at work. The boy was highly skilled, that much was obvious. He had more skill with one arm than most blacksmiths had with two. Once more the revolutionary left, but this time he sailed to another island to meet with one of his contacts. He told his contact about the boy and the information was passed along through the revolutionarys’ web of informants all the way to the top. The man soon got his answer. His superiors were intrigued by the boy and wanted to know if there was any way to get him to work for them. The man thought about this for a while and concocted a plan.
The man approached Reiji out of the blue when Reiji was going to the dump for more metal. He complimented on the boy’s work with weaponry and told him that he had been keeping an eye on him. The man asked the boy if he would like to earn a little money for his work. Reiji asked him how much he was offering and the sum surprised him. If he sold this man even one of his swords, he would earn what his mom earned in a day. Reiji agreed to work for the man. When Reiji got home, he told his parents about his encounter. They were shocked by what they heard. They knew Reiji was good, but they had never thought he was this good. At first Reiji’s parents were suspicious of the man, since he had not actually told Reiji his name. But after some discussion they decided that the man was probably a government agent and didn’t want his name spread around town. So they allowed Reiji to work for the man. Reiji’s parents never saw the man and he never revealed himself to them. Instead he worked by giving Reiji a sack and telling him where to drop off the weapons. The drop off point was near the dump and so it worked out perfectly for Reiji who went there almost every day anyways. Each time Reiji left the sack at the drop off point, he would always come back the next day to find it filled with money for the weapons.
This went on for eight years without a hitch. Then the World Government snuck a spy into the revolutionaries and found out about several drop off points including Reiji’s. They got the names of many dissenters and the Marines were sent in to deal with the problem. Reiji’s revolutionary contact found out that their security had been breached and he moved quickly to pull Reiji and his parents out of there. He arrived too late to save Reiji’s parents. They were dead by the time he got there. Reiji would have been dead as well, but he was off getting metal from the dump. Unfortunately for the revolutionary he found himself trapped in the house with over twenty Marines. He did not escape them. When Reiji returned home, he found his house on fire. He could not force his way in, the flames were hot and the house was already engulfed in the fire. The Marines were still in the area and they quickly realized who Reiji was. After all, he was the only person crazy enough to try to find a way to break into the burning house. The Marines immediately surrounded Reiji and one of them, the leader, moved in to finish him. Reiji tried fighting back by using a sheet of metal in his sack, but he had no hope of holding up against a sword with that. In the battle, Reiji first lost his right ear, than the front of his forehead was cut, and finally the Marine cut his chest open and Reiji collapsed. The Marines left Reiji there, thinking he was dead. They did not bother burning the body. They left that job to the townspeople. It was a foolish decision made because they had been so successful in their mission and wanted to spend some time in town. It also proved to be a fatal decision. Reiji had not been killed, just badly injured and knocked out.
The townspeople came to see what had happened. One of Reiji’s parent’s friends saw the young man lying there in the snow and she got him out of there. The woman cleaned up Reiji’s wounds and bandaged him up. Several hours later, Reiji awoke and learned all that had happened from the woman who had saved him. Though he was angry, Reiji stayed where he was until late that night. The woman had gone to bed several hours before. Reiji rose and forced himself to stand. He left the house and went to his home, which by this point was no longer burning. In the ruins of the house, Reiji found the remains of his parents and his revolutionary contact. He also found many of his weapons, some of which he had been planning to give to the revolutionaries later that day. Reiji took a dagger and slipped it into his pocket. He went to the docks and quickly located the Marine’s ship. Reiji slipped onto the ship and killed the nightguards with relative ease. Next came the hard part. He had to go after the Marine captain and the other strong crew members. Fortunately for Reiji, the rest of the Marines were still sleeping off their day on the town so he was able to kill each one with a quick stab to their heart. Finally, Reiji left the ship as silently as he had come. He knew he could no longer stay in town so he went and collected some supplies including his sack full of metal, his anvil, and food and drink for the journey to wherever he went. Then Reiji took one of the Marine’s ships and left. The twenty year old Reiji disappeared and was not seen for the next two years. Reiji had decided to seek a new life in another town, far away from his home. He would get a job and begin work on a new project. This project would include making himself a metal arm and ear. He would make himself into a cyborg.
The next day, the townspeople awakened to find all of the Marines dead on their ship. The alarm was raised, but no one could find the perpetrator. The day after that, two more Marine battleships arrived, called in by a couple of frightened townspeople. It took the Marines a few hours, but they pieced together what had happened. A young man named Reiji Hagiwara had been helping revolutionaries by making weapons for them. The Marines who had been dispatched to deal with this young man had killed the traitor’s parents and another man who had tried to save them. Then the young man had returned and been almost killed by the Marine squad, but he had somehow survived and gotten his hands on a knife of some kind. After that he had killed all of the Marines on the ship in the harbor, regardless of whether or not they had actually been involved in the killings of his family and friend. The Marines also found out that their comrades had been killed while they were drunk. With all of this evidence they assigned Reiji Hagiwara a bounty of 8,000,000 and labeled him ‘extremely dangerous’. The bounty was a sizable sum, considering the fact that Reiji had been met with little resistance, but the Marines were shocked by the sheer audacity of the killings.
Personality: Reiji is generally a quiet person. He can be nice and polite while talking to someone, but most of the time he seems lost in his thoughts. He does not always answer someone when they ask him a question, but he is not trying to be rude when it happens. The truth is he is in pain. He never really got over the loss of everyone he loved. At times when he is alone, Reiji will sing softly under his breath. He’s actually a pretty good singer, but doesn’t know many songs. On the other hand, when Reiji is threatened or someone else near him is under attack, he will not hesitate to literally tear the assailant limb from limb. He will enjoy doing it too.
