It can't be the past for a couple of reasons.

1. Ace is standing there with his back to us and he's full grown.

2. Look at what Shanks is saying. "Really? He still talks about becoming the Pirate King?" Luffy didn't say he wanted to be king until just before Shanks left.

Well there was Haki....and Coby.....lots of others.

And by "In The Past" it can mean just a flashback a few years back, it doesn't have to be 30-years-ago for crying out loud. Honestly that's a bit of a stupid and insignificant detail and if people are THIS bored then I'm not surprised I haven't gotten into this series.... =_= sorry.

Luffy was really little when Shank's arm was bait, and Ace is only 2 yrs only than Luffy.

Actually, if you look at that picture, it looks like Ben Beckman is missing an arm. Clearly, Shanks stole it from him.

He just gave it back later.
