But if you hit someone with a sword, wouldn't that count as a harmful action, therefore making this pretty useless... unless you use it to, I don't know... pet people... Well, that's your business, I suppose. APPROVED.

I see what you mean, I meant if the wielder performs a bad action against the "friend" after the ability is used. So the slash does not count at all as a harmful action as it was used to befriend the target.
