Wouldn't the sword itself rust, and then lose its cutting power and durability?

hmmm well i think because the rust fruit itself that was infused with the sword might keep that actually sword from rusting. Kinda like how a fire sword doesnt melt.

Fire, in and of itself, is not always hot enough to melt tempered metal, and a fire sword does not exude fire on a regular basis. This two things make it so that a fire sword would not melt itself inadvertently.
Another thing: wouldn't a sword with the rust fruit rust the body of it's wielder the longer you used it?

Whats keeps a elemental sword from hurting the body as the user as well?
You dont see Devil fruit users or items destroy themselfs with there own power. Anyone who ate a devil fruit Normall gains resistance to there fruits power. So the same sence it should include weapons.

The sword produces elements, it doesn't turn adjoining objects to some other substance...

K im going to edit it where it doesnt Rust other object. basically just making it a sword Thats rusty and when your cut with rust objects it can infect you is that ok?
