To the targets , the voice , the appearance , the smell , the taste and even the sense of touch they have when they interact with the user is different. Moreover , in a battle , the user can make himself look severely injured at the eyes of the enemy to decieve them , make himself look as a giant to cause their fear or even demonstrate himself dodging an attack with another Devil Fruit ability , while in reality he dodged it normally. The user can trigger the power any time he wants to just by looking at his target.
Aside from the standard disadvantages of the fruit , though , the user can only play with the senses of one person at a time and the only thing that the target senses differently is the user ,whatever they hold and their actions.

why not just be a hypnotist, like Jango or Laffitte?

Well , to answer admin-sama's question , the thing is that this Hypnosis is triggered easily and the user does not have to look the target at the eyes but he can decide it at will.Otherwise , it would not be different than normal hypnotism. And that's an answer for Gael's question , too.
