History: Long before the World Government took the Tarai current as their method of moving across the oceans, there existed a clan of nomadic fishmen who followed the current's flow all their lives, isolated from Fishman Island; This clan sported some uniquely evolved fishmen, adapted to life on the move. Then, the World Government purged the clan, either killing or enslaving most of the fishmen, completely destroying the nomadic clan and their heritage.
Or at least they thought they did.
Salvat was the pride of the nomadic clan; he was always at the forefront, being praised by adults for his courage, daring and natural strength, cheered for by those of the same age as him, especially his best friend, a crustacean fishman named Crut. No matter what flaws he possessed, they all overlooked them in preference for his skills with his hands. The elder even taught him the 'Humbolt Marlin' style, a sword style unique to the Tarai fishpeople, in that it utilized the flow of water and air as one with the blade, in which very few of the adult warriors had learned. He made friends with everyone, due to his charm and well fulfilled bravado, and was even crushed on by a little mermaid when his clan had passed by a merfolk group once. Yes, his life was quite hard as was with all nomadic fishpeople, but it was a good life.
Then, the purging began; the World Government, Marines and a few pirates looking to butt in for slave trade profits began to hunt all nomadic fishpeople clans down, capturing many and killing some. Salvat and Crut were among the adults fighting these forces, and had put up a very good fight. In the end, however, the clan elder was killed, and the rest, Salvat and Crut included, were taken to slave encampments near the Red Line. On the way there and while there, Salvat was defiant, smartly insulting and mocking his captors at every turn, earning a sound whipping each time; even when he was branded with the Tenryuubito insignia, he simply grinned, swallowed his agony and flipped one of the Tenryuubitos the bird; his arms were put through great torture from then on, including being run through spikes, stabbed, whipped and stepped on. Regardless, Salvat had other things planned; he planned an escape from the Red Line, and his adult fishmen brethren helped him do so, buying him and Crut time while they sneaked off, killing a few guards in the process.
During this time, Salvat's snout grew longer and more sturdy; this was a good thing for him, as he travelled with Crut to Fishman Island. Remembering the 'Humbolt Marlin' sword style his elder taught him, he practiced everyday, training hard and strong. Was revenge his motivation? Revenge against all humans for their treatment of his brethren? No, it was his desire to destroy the establishment that decided to set such racist laws and treaties out. He trained daily, going against tough opponents ranging from rowdy pirates to vicious sea kings. All the while supported by Crut. Through 3 years of hardship, talent and burning excess of effort, he managed to master the Humbolt Marlin style completely to his elder's prior instructions. After he and Crut met a sea king they named Davey, they set out to fulfill the plan that he and Crut had been planning for a long, long time; the operation to bring down the World Government, except he would be doing it his way; they would need a ship if he were to carry out his plan, however, and so as young adults and a sea king, Salvat, Crut and Davey travelled to find a carpenter; they then found a cursed fishman carpenter, by the name of Govire, and rescued him from his place at the Shabondy Archipelago; it was here that Salvat engaged in a grueling battle with a marine dual axe user; he was buying time for the carpenter, Crut and Davey to escape, and was being savagely outclassed. The battle ended with the man breaking Salvat's sharp and hard snout, along with a few of his bones. Under cover fire of Crut and Davey, and with the assistance of Govire, they retreated with Salvat; Salvat asked him his name, and the axe wielder simply said "Jessop." and walked off, letting them escape.
Govire constructed them the submersible vessel, the Humbolt Wing and they began their grand mission of taking down the World Government. Salvat, however, had been stung by his loss, and trained even harder, to produce a style that would redeem his elder's teachings; through many years of grueling training, burning effort and endless enthusiasm and charisma, he had refurbished and modified the Humbolt Marlin sword style into the Di-pronged Marlin Sword style, keeping his broken nose as a weapon, but more importantly as a memento that Salvat still had many more powerful enemies to take down before ever even trying to usurp the World Government. He met Stickleback Johnstoni, before continuing on to become notorious pirates.
Personality: Is charismatic, talented and daring. But most of all, he's got an attitude. He will go through great lengths to insult his enemies, suavely out talking them and getting on their bad side. When he is in the midst of battle with his crew, he shows determination and will power that will not be shattered by any circumstances; always looking to mess with the forces of the Marines and the World Government, he has and will challenge any of these forces to battle, though their ship's method of travel (under water, like a submarine) irks him greatly. He is easy to socialize with, and is someone everyone wants to know. As such, he is an excellent judge of character, and this trait has served him well in forming his crew. He takes one on one duels so seriously, he threatens his own crew to interrupt him on pain of death. Will train relentlessly each day, never stopping to get stronger, always remembering Jessop. He hates the Gorousei, Tenryuubito and all slave drivers and hunters, and enjoys bringing captured slave drivers to Davey or worse, to Johnstoni. He is surprisingly forgiving, and will tolerate most mistakes and misfires made on the ship, and he values each member of his crew, even Govire and Johnstoni. When it comes right down to it, he is rather understanding to most creatures, even humans, and is one of the crew who hates humans the least, having enough insight to blame the World Government's system rather than the species. This does not make him merciful, however, as he tends to turn a blind eye to humans in peril.
Ship: Humbolt Wing
Ship Flag: a red halo divided up into three curved arrows on a dark blue background; at the center is a falchion and a hook crossed together.
Devil Fruit: none
Special Abilities: Salvat has more physical power and upper body strength than speed or the lower body, and is less speedy than Johnstoni or Govire, though is faster than Crut. He has relatively above average reflexes, and needs to have such an attribute. He is a master tactician and can plan strategies with his forces against that of others. He is an expert at navigation, and is especially adept at feeling and observing the flow of currents. He can, however, also feel and observe the flow of air out out of water. He has less endurance than Johnstoni or Crut, but more than Grovire. He has mastered the Humbolt Marlin sword style, the Di Prong Marlin sword style and the Humbolt shuffle.
Learned Techniques (Keep it 1-25):Humbolt Marlin Sword styles: A sword style unique to the Tarai nomads, it relies on the user focusing the flow of current/water around him and move his sword in accordance to the current making the flow and blade one (all forms of this style work better underwater than out of water)
Sea wind strike: the simplest and most basic style. Involves the user focusing on flow of air/water around him a and moving the blade along with it at the opponent.
Current needle: Requires more focus of mind and body, focusing the flow of air/water around the blade by melding with them, and thrusting forward in a straight direction, causing damage and slight disorientation.
Sea streak: User skirts the water with his blade, and slashes, sending a sharp layer of water at the target in a broad arc. It can cut through most wood for 5 metres, then dissipates into a harmless spray of water for the rest.
Rocky river strike: follows a turbulent current with his blade in hand and cuts the opponent with the blade and the force of the current; is just an advanced version of the sea wind strike, except it requires more turbulent waters to have more effect and it is even less effective out of water.
Humbolt Shuffle: A unique movement pattern that likens the slightest current of wind through the air with the current of water in the sea; how one would move with the flow of current underwater. When such movement is made with the lower body, it results in smooth and flowing movement that makes the user seem like a blur in motion. This movement is effective for close quarter combat and navigating away from opponents.
Di Prong Marlin Sword style: For when Salvat gets serious; he uses his regular blade, but also his kept previously cut off snout, that acts more or less like a blade as well; there is a fundamental difference between this modified style and the original; this style uses two blades rather than one. While this doesn't seem like much,
Shadow wind strike; Slashes one blade powerfully at the opponent; if the first attack is dodged, the next blade will follow the flow of wind/water up and strike the opponent with a follow up.
Horizontal Funnel needle; a redux of the 'current needle', only it uses two blades to create a sharp and pointed funnel of wind/water that is driven at the opponent.
typhoon Cross sweep; A cross slash with two blades out of the water after rushing the opponent with the two blades swung from under the arms.
Aqua halo; Rapidly spins one sword around until it forms a swirling hoop of razor sharp water, then swings the other blade at an angle to send the halo at the target. They can cut through wood and thin layers of metal, but take a while to prepare; this attack may not be very ideal for moving targets, and dissipate after 10 metres. (needs to be done over or within a body of water eg lake, sea etc)
Aqua Ring Rave; twirls both blades at his side near or in water and send more than one halo at the enemy; this attack has more halos than the first version, but less density than the first as well; this means less distance and less power, meaning that they can be deflected more easily than the original version.
Dance of Jormungand; a rapid session of weaving left and right, swinging in a swaying and free flowing motion which renders the user difficult to hit and tricky to evade his blade strikes; is a close quarter combat maneuver by right, and is most effective in continuous close quarter sword bouts.
Rise of Jormungand; a powerful attack involving the user spinning under water with his blades, in correspondence to the pre existing currents flowing under the water; the blades gather the swirling vortex under and around him and finally, with one powerful push 'uncoils' the turbulence from under and around him upwards at the enemy, rising out through the surface in a razor sharp water funnel that can cut opponents, and even the user himself; the more turbulent the water, the more lethal the attack.
Weapons/Items: Reinforced saber; a simple saber that has been reinforced with more stainless metal that can withstand rust.
Snout blade; When Jessop had cut Salvat's snout clean off his face, Salvat escaped, but not before taking it with him; after Grovire attached a handle to the weapon and reinforced it, it now lays in bandages at Salvat's hip, until he decides to have a serious duel.
Goals: to overthrow the World Government, abolish the slave trade permanently and retake the Tarai Current.
