Appearance: Carver Bruce is a hybrid, a result of the forbidden and somewhat unexplainable union between a giant and a human. Born to a Giant mother, Carver is a pipsqueak amongst Giants, but a giant amongst men. He is a huge native man, larger even than Whitebeard, and very broad-shouldered and with huge muscles. He wears a torn vest open over a bare chest, revealing red chest hair and some deep scars from where he was tortured, as well as loose pants and enormous leather combat boots. Carver’s hair is fiery red, rough and curly, and is in a wild mop, with carefully maintained facial hair. Aside from being really big, Carver’s most noticeable feature is that his right hand and forearm have been replaced with a gun-arm, all gleaming metal and threatening barrels. On his back Carver carries a large metal case with the unused Armaments stored inside.
History: Carver was born of a giant mother and a human father, but was cast out by his mother for his small stature, which in a giant society would almost surely prove to be fatal sooner rather than later. Carver’s father took him to live elsewhere, working as a fisherman on a large fishing punt that sailed out from the island they lived upon. It was fortunate for Carver that there were known men who were larger than normal, such as Edward Newdegate, for that somewhat lessened the stigma of his hybrid nature as he was able to hide behind a pretense of being one of the abnormally large humans. As a young man he joined the same boat his father worked upon, his great strength proving helpful in dragging up fish-filled nets and warding off immature Sea Kings. It was on this boat that Carver first encountered pirates, when a band boarded the ship whilst it was far off the coast, with no intent to take prisoners.
When Carver realized the ship was being raided he fought back, but having never had much experience in the ways of fighting he was overwhelmed despite his great size and hulking strength. The pirates were able to ascertain his nature as a giant hybrid by his facial features and having trussed him up they decided that since they had not made any money raiding the ship he’d make a good consolation prize, as a giant-human hybrid would fetch a high price on the slave market. This was the decision of the captain, but it wasn’t met with resounding approval by his crew, given that most of them were firm in their belief of humankind’s superiority over any other race. The most vocal in this opinion was the first mate, and it was he who organized the group of pirates who snuck into where Carver was chained up and it was he who performed the acts of torture. To this day Carver still bears the deep scar marks on his chest, back and arms. It was also the first mate who cut off Carver’s arm, a final cruel act before the horrid torture was interrupted by a fearsome storm. As water poured into the ship as it was battered by the wind and the waves, the pirates abandoned the bloodied and beaten Carver, fleeing back to the safety of their more sturdy ship. Alone in a sinking ship, injured and surrounded by the bodies of his fellow crewmates, including his father, Carver hit a low he had never before felt, the rock bottom of life. And there he found not a wish to die, but a wish to live. His giant heritage flared up within him, the desire to fight on burst out and he freed himself from his heavy chain bindings, escaping the ship with his father’s body. Carver returned to the island, buried his father and had his arm cauterized, then vanished from the island without warning.
The giant’s blood now boiling in his veins, Carver set out to find other giants, to learn what it was that made his blood boil with such heat and such passion. South Blue was not well known for having many giants, so it took him many years to find a roving band of giant pirates. During that time Carver found a skilled engineer to construct him a prosthetic arm for his training, as he taught himself to fight by venturing alone into dangerous jungles, boxed with giant octopi and lifted heavy things many times without moving them anywhere. As his training became more and more dangerous, Carver returned to the engineer and had his prosthetic arm rebuilt into a modular weapon platform that could be fitted with a variety of weapons befitting the dangerous situations he got himself into. [It was during this exploration of the South Blue’s most bizarre and dangerous islands that Carver discovered a strange fruit, adding it into an enormous fruit smoothie that stripped half an orchid of its fruit. Having no idea of what he’d blended into his gigantic milk-based fruit product, Carver consumed the entire thing, inadvertently gaining the protective power of the Orbu Orbu no Mi.]
After years of self-training, adventuring and searching Carver finally found a small band of giants, good-natured pirates who were pirates simply for the challenge and the adventure. Though he was not a full-blooded giant, the others understood that the blood burned in his veins, that Carver desired to fight and to feel the thrill of excitement with other like-minded beings. They also understood his deeper-buried feelings, of loneliness and of shame, for they were the runts of a tribe of Grand Line giants, exiled to South Blue for their insulting tininess. With them Carver learned the ways of Giant Combat, a brutal hand-to-hand style of combat that focused on overbearing the foe with greater strength and mass. Against the full-blooded giants, Carver’s Giant Combat was lacking and weak, but against humans he knew it would be something to be feared. He knew that if ever he were to be attacked by a gang of discriminatory bigots ever again, he’d be prepared. Their final adventure together was to challenge Reverse Mountain and enter the Grand Line. Upon their arrival in the Grand Line, they agreed to disband and each find their own crew, to see who had become the greatest Giant Warrior of the South Blue. In his mind, Carver had only one firm goal aside from wanting to adventure and fight strong foes. His goal was simple enough: join a real pirate crew, learn the ways of the pirates and their methods, probe for information about the mysterious pirate crew that had mutilated him so badly, and find them.
Personality: Like many giants, Carver is good-natured for the most part, but remains gruff and brash despite his good cheer. Significantly, Carver holds firm to the honor of combat. Whilst he doesn’t follow the customs of his full-blood giant brethren, Carver understands the shame that occurs from fleeing battle, and revels in a good fight. Even when severely wounded he would fight on, ignorant of his own health, in order to see his opponent beaten and his honor maintained. Carver also has a sense of lowered self-confidence with regards to his looks and heritage, feeling out of place both around giants, where he is too small, and around humans, where he is too large. Alongside this, he is shamed by the scars and gunarm that remind him of the horrible torture he was put through earlier in life, and can be very quick to anger if he thinks someone is making fun of his physical appearance.
Ship: None
Ship Flag: None
Devil Fruit: Orbu Orbu no Mi
Type: Paramecia
Effect: The user can generate orbs of pure force that act as solid walls once formed, they are translucent but can be freely manipulated by the user. General use is simply to envelope self in an orb to protect against attacks. Because the user controls the orbs, he can consciously choose to let particular things pass through the bubble’s force-walls whilst selectively blocking out other things.
Special Abilities: Carver is, as a giant-human hybrid, blessed with inhuman strength, durability and endurance, but is shackled down by a less than impressive top speed. Nonetheless, physically Carver is hugely strong, able to lift small cutters and patrol ships without too much effort. Carver fights with a rough-housing brawling style of combat, brutal punches and bodychecks designed to overwhelm the enemy with pure strength, and is particularly skilled at grappling, given his huge frame and enormous strength. He is practiced enough that he can move into a very fast straight charge for tackling when required. His cybernetic gunhand is often used as a powerful striking melee weapon, especially when swapped out for a melee attachment prior to combat.
Learned Techniques: Orbu Orbu no Shield: The most simple of Bruce’s Orb techniques, this is simply a bubble projected around himself or another person to defend from attacks for a period of time.
Orbu Orbu no Dome: A more energy-intensive bubble, this covers a far wider region, though is proportionally weaker than the smaller orbs at this point in time.
Orbu Orbu no Obstruction: A more inventive use of the defensive orb, this technique creates a bubble around the barrel of a gun, in front of a bow or inside the muzzle of a cannon, obstructing the object from firing.
Orbu Orbu no Armor: A very energy-intensive defensive use of the Fruit, this generates hundreds of small orbs that cluster around Bruce’s body in a form fitting fashion, essentially creating armor that can defend him to a degree. His talent allows him to make the bubbles “cling” to him and move as he does, so that he can remain mobile in fights.
Orbu Orbu no Roadblock: An offensive use for Carver’s orbs is to manifest them in front of someone’s path when they are running, or with proper timing even around one foot, causing them to misstep and tumble. A larger sphere will feel almost identical to running into a steel wall, and can be very painful.
Orbu Orbu no Fastball: Carver creates a relatively small orb in the palm of his hand to sling at opponents, striking them like small cannonballs, or simply manifests them and controls their flight path, accelerating them into enemies.
Orbu Orbu no Hammer: A blunt force offensive skill, Carver forms a bubble around his arm and slams it into his opposition.
Orbu Orbu no Explosion: A dark technique whereby Carver generates an orb inside something and then expands it outwards, breaking up the object and destroying it utterly. Due to his strict morals about honor in combat, Carver doesn’t even consider the idea of using this technique on a living animal.
Orbu Orbu no Platform: By lining a number of orbs up next to each other in overlapping patterns Carver can create a floating platform to sit objects upon and with enough preparation can turn such a platform into a raft to float across the ocean.
Arsenal Arms Bigshot: Used with the Smoke Armament, the nozzles spray out a dense cloud of flammable foam into an orb formed around the Armament, and then a specialized projectile is fired from the central launcher, igniting the ball into a fireball and dragging it with it, where it explodes on impact as the orb bursts, spraying out the sticky foam, which continues to burn like adhesive fire. The Smoke Armament is fitted with the materials needed to perform this, but it is an emergency maneuver and as such can only be performed once. After it has been done, the Smoke Armament has to be disassembled to replace the foam ejectors and the explosive projectile.
Arsenal Arms Mindblow: Used with the Grip Armament, Carver holds the hand out, palm facing the opponent and fingers splayed as an orb forms in the palm, and then the fingertips discharge electricity into the orb until it is a crackling blue ball of lightning. It launches at the opponent, dealing stunning electrical damage and possibly inducing electrical seizure of the muscles around the impact zone. This is a short range technique, effective only to about 5 meters. It is a one-off move because the hidden battery within the Grip Armament needs to be replaced.
Arsenal Arms Grenade Bomber: Used with the Blast Armament, this causes all three hand cannons to fire at once, binding three explosive rounds with an orb pushed by their momentum at high speed at a single target. The orb grows suddenly as the target passes through the barrier and the rounds hit, exploding and containing their entire explosion within the orb to deal extreme damage to the opponent from all directions. This consumes all the ammunition in the Blast Armament and becomes proportionally weaker if any of the rounds have already been used.
Arsenal Arms Hammer Blow: Used with the Strike Armament, Carver charges forwards, picking up the foe with his hand as he punches with the Strike Armament, triggering a compressed air piston that pumps the blockbuster point forward for immense damage from the combination of momentum from Carver’s giant charge and the jackhammer-like strike. The compressed air cylinder only holds enough air for a single usage of the technique before needing replacement.
Arsenal Arms Angermax: Used with the Spin Armament, a mechanism throws the gatling gun into overdrive, firing off all 500 rounds in about 10 seconds. This huge acceleration in the firing rate burns out the Gatling gyros and thus the Spin Armament cannot be used again until repaired.
Weapons/Items: The most obvious piece of equipment that Carver bears is the gunhand that replaces his right hand and forearm. A trigger-base fitted with a modular locking port, the unit at the end of Carver's arm allows a multitude of specifically-designed units to mount into it, from a triple hand-cannon to a battering ram. Other modules include a cutting-edge Gatling gun, an explosives-launching device, quad shotgun and a harpoon launcher, though he has other models as well, such as a rudimentary replacement hand. He often carries fusebombs and dynamite with him, and given his proportions these explosives tend to be much stronger than regular explosives.
Goals: To find the pirates who cut off his hand and make them pay, and to see the end of hybrid discrimination.
